Marine mammals

Seals and whales

The most common marine mammals in Denmark is the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) and harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Porpoises are the only whales that breed in Denmark. Porpoises are numerous in Danish waters still  it is rare to se them at close hold because they are very shy and unlike its cousin the dolphins, they rarely jump out of the water.

The harbour seal is also widespread in some parts of Denmark. Unlike the porpoises, the harbour seal gives birth on land.

Similarly, one can see in some places large colonies of seals  lying ashore and sun themselves.

Fjord & Bælt have 4 porpoises and 3 harbor seals in a natural harbour bassin.
